My name is Katie Kaelin and I’m part of the SIP program at Presentation Academy. There were many things that helped me decide to join SIP and the most significant one is my passion for art and design. I am very passionate about the problem of fast fashion in the world and, and want to explore the benefits of upcycling. That’s why I was excited to be given this opportunity.
My project is to redesign clothing and make new garments from old ones. Also, I will be making new clothes using sustainable, environmentally-friendly fabrics. I want to create a collection of about 10 designs and have students model them in a fashion show. I will post the video of my show to a social media platform to inspire other young fashion lovers. I will document my progress along the way, posting little videos to social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram where students can follow me on my journey.
The other part of my project will be interviewing people in the fashion industry to better understand the effects of fast fashion and what people can do to help the environment through their shopping habits. I will also be interviewing students to get an understanding of how knowledgeable my peers are about the topic of fast fashion. I will create a video using clips from the interviews and post it to a social platform in order to help increase the public’s awareness of the growing problem of fast fashion.
I can’t wait to share my creations with the world! This class gives me an opportunity to further my understanding of the fashion industry and create designs that leave less of a footprint on our environment, all while having fun! .
